Three albums in and a bunch of glittery live shows later, The Presets are still concocting a synth-driven dance music sound that’s as timeless as it is taunting.
Pacifica, like Presets records before it, has a disco pulse that is raw and yet remarkably graceful.
Sprightly tempos dominate the album, and on those rare moments where the band forgoes rousing energy for something slightly more understated (songs like “A.O.” and “It’s Cool” come to mind), the tracks glide languidly before succumbing to a twinkly electronic end.
When the Australian natives really hit their mark, we get songs like “Promises,” a dominant, blustery and booming production. When they settle for alright, “Fall” is what listeners fall victim to: a track whose identity gets lost in all of its faddish glitz. “Fast Seconds” displays The Presets’ ability to be sonically calculating, which is when they’re at their most satisfying. Pacifica is equal parts galvanizing and dizzying, making it the perfect pill-popping party starter.
